The San Diego Padres snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on August 19, 2025. With this win, the Padres remained two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings, regaining momentum after a difficult week.
Nick Pivetta was impressive on the mound, tying his season high with 10 strikeouts over six innings. Despite allowing a leadoff home run to Jung Hoo Lee on his second pitch, Pivetta quickly settled in. He walked two more batters in the first inning but limited the Giants to just three additional baserunners—two hits and a hit batter—over the rest of his outing. Pivetta, now 13-4 on the season, combined with relievers Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam, and Robert Suarez to hold the Giants to just four hits.
The Giants scored immediately, as Jung Hoo Lee homered to right-center for his second career leadoff shot and sixth long ball of the year. However, the Padres tied it in their half of the first inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on Christian Koss's throwing error, advanced on Luis Arraez’s double, and scored on a Manny Machado ground out.
San Diego took the lead in the fourth inning after Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng struggled with his control, hitting two batters to load the bases. Jose Iglesias drove in a run with a single, and after Spencer Bivens relieved Teng, he walked Tatis to force in another Padres run, giving San Diego a 3-1 advantage.
Nick Pivetta celebrated enthusiastically as he ended his outing with a strikeout to finish the sixth inning, punctuating his dominant performance and energizing the home crowd.
Pivetta reached double-digit strikeouts in a game for the 20th time in his Major League career, further cementing his reputation as a strikeout pitcher.
The series continues as Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45 ERA) is scheduled to face Padres lefty JP Sears (7-10, 5.12 ERA) on Wednesday night.
The Padres halted a four-game slide and secured a 5-1 win over the Giants, highlighted by Nick Pivetta’s 10-strikeout gem and key offensive contributions from Fernando Tatis Jr., Jose Iglesias, and the Padres lineup. This victory keeps San Diego within striking distance of the NL West lead and sets the stage for an exciting continuation of the series.
