The New York Mets snapped their struggles with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners, powered by a stellar major league debut from right-hander Nolan McLean. McLean, a 24-year-old 2023 draft pick out of Oklahoma State, delivered 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, four walks, and striking out eight. His impressive five-pitch mix kept Seattle’s lineup off balance all afternoon at Citi Field.
McLean received a hero’s reception from the fans with three standing ovations—one as he left the mound in the sixth inning, and more when he appeared on the scoreboard ahead of the seventh and ninth innings. The victory marked only the Mets’ third in their last 17 games and gave the team and its fans a much-needed boost.
The turning point of the game came in the third inning. With the bases loaded, McLean fielded a sharp comebacker off the bat of Julio Rodríguez, spun, and fired to second base to initiate a slick inning-ending 1-4-3 double play, escaping serious trouble and preserving the scoreless start.
Francisco Lindor opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third inning. In the seventh, Juan Soto added a sacrifice fly, and Pete Alonso followed with a run-scoring double, bringing his RBI total to 100 for the season—the fourth time Alonso has reached the century mark in his career.
Closer Edwin Díaz permitted a solo home run to Eugenio Suárez in the ninth, but finished out the final six outs for his 24th save of the season, ensuring McLean’s debut would end in victory.
Seattle starter Bryan Woo (10-7) was tough in defeat, allowing just one run over six innings. The game marked the 24th consecutive start this season in which Woo has pitched at least six innings.
Nolan McLean became just the seventh Mets pitcher to throw at least five scoreless innings in his MLB debut, and the first to do so since Zack Wheeler accomplished the feat on June 18, 2013.
Next, the Mets and Mariners travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the MLB Little League Classic. Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (9-6, 3.71 ERA) is slated to start against Mariners right-hander George Kirby (8-5, 3.71 ERA) on Sunday night.
Nolan McLean’s impressive debut gave the Mets a lift, ending a rough stretch with a win over the Mariners. His coolness under pressure and dynamic pitching provided New York fans hope for the season ahead, while timely hitting from Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso sealed the crucial victory. Seattle’s Bryan Woo continued his streak of dependable starts but was outdueled on this occasion. The teams now look ahead to their next contest at the MLB Little League Classic.
