Shohei Ohtani extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run double in the fifth inning, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.
Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-7) delivered a strong performance, going seven innings for the fifth time this season and striking out nine. Teoscar Hernández contributed significantly with two hits and two RBIs.
Reds rookie Chase Burns (0-3) impressed with his third straight game of 10 strikeouts, but he remains in search of his first major league win. The right-hander allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Cincinnati mounted a rally attempt in the ninth inning. Will Benson hit an RBI single, and the Reds loaded the bases with two outs. However, Jack Dreyer entered the game and secured his first big-league save by getting Matt McLain to ground out to short, ending the game.
In the fifth inning, Miguel Rojas led off with a double, and Mookie Betts followed with a one-out base hit. Shohei Ohtani then hit a line-drive double to center field off a 99.4 mph fastball from Burns, extending the Dodgers' lead to 3-1.
During his nine-game hitting streak, Ohtani is batting .306 (11 for 36) with nine runs scored and 13 RBIs.
Yamamoto was dominant after the third inning, not allowing another hit and retiring 14 of the last 15 Cincinnati batters he faced.

Chase Burns made history by becoming only the second Cincinnati pitcher since 1900 to record double-digit strikeouts in three consecutive starts, joining Raisel Iglesias (2015).
The Dodgers and Reds will continue their series with the middle game featuring Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 2.75 ERA) against Reds LHP Nick Lodolo (8-6, 3.08). Lodolo is coming off a complete-game shutout in his last start on July 23 at Washington.
