The Miami Marlins powered past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 on Sunday, thanks to a pair of home runs from Otto López. The win at loanDepot park allowed the Marlins to avoid a three-game sweep from their National League East rivals and snapped a five-game losing streak.
Otto López was the star of the game, delivering two crucial home runs—one a three-run shot in the explosive four-run first inning, and another solo drive in the seventh to cushion Miami’s lead. Máximo Acosta drove in a run during the opening frame as the Marlins sent 10 batters to the plate against Phillies starter Taijuan Walker.
Troy Johnston also contributed with two hits for Miami. Ronny Henriquez shined out of the bullpen, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his seventh win of the season. Lake Bachar secured the save, skillfully navigating a tense ninth inning.
Trea Turner homered and Brandon Marsh went 3-for-4 for the Phillies. Turner, however, was forced to exit the game in the seventh due to a right hamstring strain after beating out a grounder and reaching on a throwing error.
Kyle Schwarber brought in a run with a clutch RBI single in the ninth inning but remains stuck at 49 home runs for the season. The Phillies’ offense rallied late, but their comeback attempt fell just short in the final frame.
Taijuan Walker lasted six innings for the Phillies, rebounding after the Marlins’ big first inning and not allowing any additional runs while striking out three. For Miami, relievers combined to deliver shutout baseball after the Phillies narrowed the gap, with Bachar closing the door despite a challenging ninth inning.
In the ninth, Lake Bachar walked the first two batters, but induced a pop-out from Bryson Stott and a lineout from pinch-hitter Harrison Bader. Kyle Schwarber then singled to bring the Phillies within one, but Bachar got Bryce Harper to ground out, sealing the Marlins’ win and preserving the lead.
Otto López became the sixth Marlins player to notch a multi-homer game this season, powering his team to a much-needed victory.
The Phillies return home to begin a four-game series against the New York Mets on Monday, with Aaron Nola (3-8, 6.78 ERA) scheduled to start the opener. The Marlins will open a four-game home series against the Washington Nationals; their starting pitcher is yet to be announced.
Otto López led the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies with two home runs, ending the Marlins’ five-game losing streak and preventing a series sweep. Despite a strong effort from the Phillies, highlighted by Trea Turner’s home run and late RBI from Kyle Schwarber, Miami’s timely hitting and bullpen performance secured the victory. The Phillies head home to face the Mets, while the Marlins prepare for a series against the Nationals.
