The San Diego Padres staged a dramatic ninth-inning rally to overcome the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2, securing another thrilling victory in Phoenix. This marks the Padres' ninth win in their last eleven games, highlighting the team's recent surge in form.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Padres sparked their comeback when Ryan O’Hearn hit a game-tying home run off Kyle Backus. It was O’Hearn’s first homer off a left-handed pitcher this season. Xander Bogaerts, who had already homered in the seventh, followed up with a double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt.
Jose Iglesias then delivered a clutch single to right field, driving in the go-ahead run. The Padres bullpen held strong in the bottom of the ninth, with closer Mason Miller securing his 21st save despite allowing a walk.
Adrian Morejon (9-4) earned the win with two solid innings in relief, conceding just one hit. Padres starter Nestor Cortes, making his debut after being acquired from Milwaukee, allowed two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and three walks.
For the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carroll provided early excitement with a 23rd home run, launching a solo shot over the right-center pool deck in the first inning. Alek Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the second to extend Arizona’s early lead.
Arizona third baseman Blaze Alexander made a noteworthy defensive play in the eighth, fielding a tricky grounder off Jackson Merrill’s bat and diving to force out a runner at third. After review, the call was overturned in favor of Arizona, preventing a Padres scoring opportunity.
Diamondbacks starter Anthony DeSclafani pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four Padres hitters before turning it over to the bullpen.
The Padres will open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, with their starting pitcher yet to be announced. The Diamondbacks have a day off before Zac Gallen (8-12, 5.48 ERA) takes the mound to begin a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics.
The San Diego Padres showcased resilience with another late-inning rally, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in Phoenix. Strong contributions from Ryan O’Hearn, Xander Bogaerts, and Jose Iglesias propelled the Padres to their ninth win in eleven games. The bullpen once again delivered in the clutch, while the starting pitching set a solid tone. As both teams look ahead to challenging series, this game underscored the Padres’ depth and determination in the 2025 MLB season.
