SAN DIEGO — Martín Maldonado hit a tying home run in the fifth inning off San Diego native Trevor Williams, and Jose Iglesias brought in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded groundout in the sixth as the San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Tuesday night, June 24, 2025.
The bottom four batters in the Padres' batting order each drove in a run during the comeback victory.
Padres rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert was forced out of the game in the fourth inning after being hit on his pitching elbow by a 103-mph line drive hit by Jacob Young. Bergert initially bent over in pain but recovered to grab the ball and throw to first, though Young beat the throw for an infield single. After being checked by a trainer, Bergert exited the game and was replaced by Adrian Morejon. Young eventually scored on James Wood’s grounder to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead.
Wood, a former Padres prospect, also drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning contributing to the Nationals' early advantage.
The Padres began their rally by scoring twice off Williams in the fourth inning. Xander Bogaerts drove in a run with a groundout, followed by Jake Cronenworth's RBI double.
Maldonado, batting ninth, tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run to left-center field, his fourth of the season.
Williams' night ended after walking the first two batters in the sixth inning. Cole Henry came on in relief and walked the bases loaded, but the Padres managed only one run in the inning, courtesy of Iglesias's go-ahead groundout.
Williams (3-9) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over seven innings, with three walks and one strikeout.
Jason Adam (6-3) earned the win for the Padres in relief, and Robert Suarez pitched the ninth inning to record his 22nd save, which tied him for the most in Major League Baseball.
Robert Suarez struck out James Wood to end the game. Wood had been a key contributor for Washington the previous night, recording three hits and four RBI in their 10-6 victory.
Adrian Morejon boasts a 1.15 ERA in the 17 career relief outings where he has been asked to record six or more outs. This includes an active streak of 18 scoreless innings across the seven such outings since October 3, 2022.
The series finale on Wednesday features Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore (3-7, 3.19 ERA) facing San Diego Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta (7-2, 3.64). Gore was one of six players acquired by the Nationals from San Diego as part of the trade for Juan Soto on August 2, 2022.
