Parker Messick delivered an outstanding performance in his second Major League start, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays and snapping both a six-game losing skid and a 28-inning scoreless streak for Cleveland.
Messick (1-0) was nearly untouchable on the mound, throwing seven innings of scoreless baseball. He limited the Rays to just four hits, struck out six batters, and did not issue a single walk. Building on his promising debut against Arizona, where he exited with a lead, Messick demonstrated poise and command throughout the evening.
Following Messick’s dominant outing, Hunter Gaddis worked a clean eighth inning, and Cade Smith closed the door in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season, preserving Cleveland’s shutout victory.
Steven Kwan led off the bottom of the first inning with a single off Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz (8-11), immediately setting the tone for the Guardians. After C.J. Kayfus drew a walk, Kyle Manzardo singled sharply to first base, driving in Kwan for Cleveland’s first run in 28 innings. Bo Naylor added a sacrifice fly, and Brayan Rocchio recorded a two-out RBI single to put the Guardians ahead 3-0.
The Guardians had limited baserunners after their first-inning outburst, with Angel Martínez's leadoff walk in the eighth serving as their only other base runner for the remainder of the game.
Baz surrendered three runs (all earned) on three hits in six innings of work. After Rocchio’s single, Baz settled in to retire 16 consecutive Guardians batters and struck out the side in his final inning. Despite his strong finish, Baz is winless in his last 10 starts and saw his record drop to 8-11. Griffin Jax and Mason Montgomery each threw a scoreless inning in relief for Tampa Bay.
Messick faced trouble in the seventh when he gave up a leadoff double to Yandy Díaz. He held firm, however, stranding Díaz at second and keeping the Rays off the scoreboard.
Parker Messick has posted a remarkable 0.66 ERA through his first two Major League starts, with 12 strikeouts against just one walk.
The series concludes with a rubber match on Wednesday. The Rays will send right-hander Drew Rasmussen (10-5, 2.62 ERA) to the mound, while the Guardians counter with righty Slade Cecconi (5-6, 4.41 ERA).
Parker Messick’s dominant pitching powered the Cleveland Guardians to a much-needed 3-0 shutout win over the Tampa Bay Rays, breaking both a six-game losing streak and a prolonged scoreless drought. Early offense in the first inning and strong bullpen work sealed the victory for Cleveland, setting the stage for an exciting series finale.
