The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed a solid 5-2 victory over the American League-leading Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening, capitalizing on key pitching performances and Toronto’s defensive struggles.
Paul Skenes delivered a strong bounce-back performance after a rare off game in his previous start. Skenes limited the Blue Jays to just two runs across six innings and struck out eight, slightly increasing his season ERA to 2.16. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed only one walk, keeping the high-powered Toronto lineup mostly in check.
Evan Sisk picked up his first major league win with a scoreless seventh inning, while Dennis Santana closed out the ninth for his eighth save of the season. Henry Davis sparked the go-ahead rally in the seventh with a leadoff double off Yariel Rodríguez, and then scored on a wild pitch by Brendon Little. Spencer Horwitz, a former Toronto first baseman, contributed two hits for Pittsburgh.
The Blue Jays committed three errors on the night, including a costly mistake in the eighth inning that led directly to a Pirates run. Brendon Little’s wild pitch in the seventh allowed Pittsburgh to take the lead for good. Toronto’s frustration bubbled over in the seventh inning when benches briefly cleared after Tommy Pham exchanged words with Blue Jays catcher Tyler Heineman following a walk.
Toronto opened scoring in the third inning with a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. fielder’s choice RBI and a Bo Bichette run-scoring single. Guerrero, however, exited the game in the fifth inning due to left hamstring tightness after performing a full split while fielding a throw to end the fourth. His status moving forward remains uncertain.
Toronto’s George Springer singled to lead off the eighth inning, but Pittsburgh reliever Kyle Nicolas quickly quelled the threat by inducing Addison Barger to hit into a double play, preserving the Pirates’ lead.
Paul Skenes has now allowed two runs or fewer in nine out of ten no-decision starts this season, underscoring his consistency at the mound.
The series continues on Tuesday as Toronto sends Max Scherzer (3-2, 3.83 ERA) in search of his 220th career win against Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller (5-11, 4.13 ERA).
The Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted the Toronto Blue Jays in a 5-2 victory, riding strong pitching from Paul Skenes and timely hitting. Defensive lapses and a key injury to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hindered the Blue Jays' efforts. The win gives Pittsburgh momentum as the series continues, while Toronto looks for answers and hopes to bounce back with Max Scherzer on the mound.
