The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres by a score of 8-2 on Wednesday night. Geraldo Perdomo hit a grand slam, while All-Stars Eugenio Suárez and Corbin Carroll, along with James McCann, also homered to lead the Diamondbacks offense.
Brandon Pfaadt earned the win for Arizona, improving his record to 9-6. He delivered a career-high eight innings, holding the Padres to just two runs on four hits. Pfaadt recorded four strikeouts and did not issue any walks. His only significant misstep was allowing Gavin Sheets' 437-foot home run to right field leading off the seventh inning, Sheets' 14th homer of the season.
Padres starter Dylan Cease took the loss, dropping his record to 3-9. Cease allowed six runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out eight batters but walked three. Perdomo, Suárez, and McCann all hit their home runs off Cease.
Geraldo Perdomo's third career grand slam and 10th home run of the season came with two outs in the fifth inning off Cease. It was the third grand slam Cease has allowed in his seven major league seasons. Walks to McCann and another batter, followed by a single, set the stage for Perdomo's big hit.
The grand slam was the ninth of the season for the Diamondbacks, moving them within two of the team record set last year.
James McCann hit his second home run of the season, a 434-foot shot into the upper deck in left field, with one out in the third inning. Eugenio Suárez followed suit with his 29th homer, also to left field, with two outs in the fourth. Corbin Carroll, who had struck out in his first four plate appearances, connected for his 21st home run off Padres reliever Eduarniel Núñez leading off the ninth inning.
Perdomo's grand slam in the fifth inning extended Arizona's lead to 6-0.
Corbin Carroll recorded four strikeouts in the game, which was the second time he had struck out four times in his last four games.
The Diamondbacks were scheduled to start left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.78 ERA) against Padres right-hander Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.79 ERA) in the series finale on Thursday night.
