Pete Alonso powered the New York Mets past the Atlanta Braves with a historic performance, breaking the Mets' all-time home run record and driving in three runs to lead the team to a convincing 13-5 victory at Citi Field.
Alonso launched his 253rd career home run, a two-run shot off Braves starter Spencer Strider in the third inning, surpassing Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record that had stood since 1988. The milestone homer was celebrated on the scoreboard with the number "253," flanked by images of Alonso and polar bears to honor his nickname.
Alonso added another home run in the sixth inning against Austin Cox, recording his 25th career multi-homer game, extending his lead over Strawberry for the most two-homer games in Mets history.
Brandon Nimmo provided a crucial jolt with a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fourth inning, propelling the Mets ahead for good. Francisco Alvarez also had a standout night, hitting two home runs, while Brett Baty added a solo shot. All six Mets home runs came with two outs, tying the expansion-era record for most two-out homers in a single game.
The offensive surge helped the Mets snap a seven-game losing streak and notch just their second win in 13 games, moving them within five games of NL East-leading Philadelphia.
The Braves opened the scoring with a run-scoring groundout from Drake Baldwin in the first. Atlanta briefly rallied in the fourth inning, as Nacho Alvarez Jr. delivered a two-run double, Jurickson Profar reached on a fielder’s choice, and Matt Olson added an RBI double, chasing Mets starter Clay Holmes from the game.
Gregory Soto earned the win in relief for the Mets, recording four crucial outs. Justin Hagenman delivered an impressive four hitless innings to secure his first career save. For the Braves, Spencer Strider took the loss, falling to 5-10 on the season.
Brandon Nimmo’s three-run homer in the fourth inning was his first since July 23, breaking a long power drought during which he hit just .177 (11-for-62) between home runs.
Pete Alonso became the 10th player in Mets history to hold sole possession of the franchise's all-time home run record, dating back to Gil Hodges, who hit the first home run in Mets history on April 11, 1962.
The Braves will send right-hander Carlos Carrasco (2-2, 6.18 ERA) to the mound to face his former team in the next game of the series. The Mets counter with left-hander David Peterson (7-5, 2.98 ERA).
Pete Alonso’s record-setting performance fueled the Mets’ 13-5 triumph over the Braves, highlighted by six two-out homers and a season-saving offensive explosion. Several Mets players contributed to the win with key blasts, helping the team end a prolonged skid and gain ground in the NL East standings.
