Philadelphia Phillies News & Updates

Kyle Schwarber hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning, Christopher Sánchez pitched eight sharp innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1.

Sánchez improved his record to 6-2, allowing only five hits and one run while striking out four over his eight frames. The victory secured a series win for Philadelphia, taking three of four games from the Marlins.

Schwarber's go-ahead blast came in the top of the eighth. He connected with a 1-0 sinker thrown by Marlins reliever Anthony Bender, sending it 428 feet to right-center field. This was Schwarber's 23rd home run of the season, placing him second in the National League behind Shohei Ohtani's 25.

Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera delivered his best start of the year. He held the potent Phillies offense to just one run and two hits while striking out five over a season-high 6 1/3 innings. Cabrera earned applause from the Miami crowd as he exited the game in the seventh after throwing 82 pitches.

Miami initially took the lead in the fifth inning. Nick Fortes singled in Dane Myers, who had led off the inning with a double, giving the Marlins a 1-0 advantage.

However, the Miami bullpen struggled to maintain the lead after Cabrera's departure. Cade Gibson entered the game in the seventh with a runner on and one out and quickly loaded the bases via a single, a wild pitch, and a hit by pitch. Despite the jam, Gibson managed to limit the damage to just one run, which tied the game at 1-1.

Orion Kerkering closed out the game for the Phillies, earning his second save of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth, Otto Kemp attempted to score from second base on an infield single hit by Bryson Stott but was thrown out at home plate, ending a potential Marlins rally.
