The San Francisco Giants delivered a commanding performance against the Baltimore Orioles, securing a 13-2 win at Oracle Park on Sunday. This victory allowed the Giants to take two out of three games in their series with Baltimore.
Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander delivered his best outing of the season, striking out a season-high 10 batters over five shutout innings. Verlander allowed just three hits and issued four walks during a 121-pitch performance, his highest pitch count since June 2018. The 42-year-old right-hander notched his 265th career win, tying Jim McCormick for 39th on the all-time wins list. Additionally, Verlander now sits just four strikeouts behind Gaylord Perry for eighth place on the all-time strikeouts list.
Rafael Devers was instrumental in the Giants' offensive outburst, homering and doubling while driving in two runs. Devers opened the scoring in the first inning with his 28th home run of the season, and later contributed an RBI double. Along with Devers, Drew Gilbert and Heliot Ramos also enjoyed three-hit games as the Giants racked up 16 total hits.
The Giants increased their lead to 7-0 by the fourth inning, highlighted by Drew Gilbert's two-run triple and Ramos' RBI single. Willy Adames added a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Starter Tomoyuki Sugano struggled for the Orioles, surrendering seven runs and 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.
Dominic Smith contributed an RBI single during a three-run sixth inning, further cementing the Giants' lead. Spencer Bivens handled the final three innings, allowing two runs in the ninth but earning his first career save.
Devers' home run in the first inning not only set the tone for the Giants, but also extended their streak to 14 consecutive games with a home run, a franchise feat not achieved since 2002.
Both Devers and Willy Adames slugged nine home runs in August, marking the first time since 2002 that two Giants teammates have tallied at least nine homers in a single month. That year, Jeff Kent hit 14 and Barry Bonds hit 10 in August.
The Orioles will head to San Diego, where Kyle Bradish (0-1, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to start against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease (6-11, 4.82 ERA) on Monday. Meanwhile, the Giants travel to Colorado, with Kai-Wei Teng (1-3, 8.78 ERA) set to take the hill versus Rockies rookie Chase Dollander (2-11, 6.55 ERA).
The San Francisco Giants showcased their offensive firepower and pitching talent in a dominant 13-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Justin Verlander recorded a historic milestone with his 265th win and 10 strikeouts, while Rafael Devers and key contributors propelled the Giants to victory. The Giants continue to make history with their home run streak and look to build on this momentum as they begin their series in Colorado. The Orioles, after a tough series, turn their attention to San Diego for their next matchup.
