The Boston Red Sox secured a 4-1 victory over the American League-leading Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, thanks to key performances from Carlos Narváez and Nathaniel Lowe.
Carlos Narváez broke open the game in the sixth inning with a crucial two-run double, driving in runs that gave Boston firm control. The hit came with two outs and forced Toronto starter Kevin Gausman from the mound.
Nathaniel Lowe contributed significantly to Boston’s offense, tallying two RBI singles during the game. Masataka Yoshida also played a key role, recording two hits and scoring a run as the Red Sox improved their road record to 40-39.
The Blue Jays managed just three hits throughout the game and suffered their fifth loss in the last six contests. Despite starting the day two games ahead in the AL East, their lead shrank as the Yankees closed to within a game following a win against the White Sox.
Boston’s Lucas Giolito allowed one run and three hits over 4 2/3 innings, but was unable to finish five innings for the second consecutive start, walking four and striking out three. Reliever Justin Wilson (4-1) secured the win after getting four outs, and Aroldis Chapman closed the game with his 32nd save in 34 chances, further boosting the Red Sox's wild card hopes.
For the Blue Jays, Kevin Gausman (10-11) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out seven before being replaced after Narváez’s double.
In a pivotal moment during the second inning, Toronto’s George Springer nearly delivered a two-run double, but his ground ball was ruled foul by third base umpire Scott Barry. On the subsequent pitch, Springer was called out looking, halting a Blue Jays rally.
Boston holds a strong 31-19 record against AL East teams and has won 23 of its last 32 matchups within the division.
The series continues with Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet (17-5, 2.69 ERA) scheduled to start on Wednesday against Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer (5-4, 5.06 ERA).
The Boston Red Sox strengthened their postseason aspirations with a 4-1 victory over the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays, powered by key offensive contributions from Carlos Narváez and Nathaniel Lowe. The loss marks another setback for the Blue Jays as their divisional lead narrows. Strong pitching performances from the Red Sox bullpen and continued divisional success highlight Boston’s push for the playoffs.
