The Atlanta Braves powered past the Detroit Tigers with a commanding 10-1 victory on Friday night, showcasing the talents of Ronald Acuña Jr., who homered, and Bryce Elder, who pitched seven excellent innings.
The Braves put on an offensive clinic, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings against former teammate Charlie Morton. Atlanta's bats stayed hot, while the Tigers struggled to keep up. Jurickson Profar set the tone with a leadoff double, and the Braves struck early and often.
Bryce Elder delivered a standout performance, allowing only one run and five hits across seven innings, striking out six without issuing a walk. This outing marked Elder's first time facing the Tigers, completing his journey facing every MLB team except his own Braves squad.
On the other side, Charlie Morton had a night to forget against his former team. He was tagged for six runs in just over an inning of work. Morton also became only the fifth pitcher in Major League history to hit 200 batters, joining an exclusive club last entered in 1927.
The Braves wasted little time, loading the bases in the first and drawing a walk to force in a run. Ozzie Albies contributed a two-run single, while Matt Olson and Acuña Jr. each provided further run support in the second inning. Acuña punctuated the rally with a two-run homer, capping Morton's brief outing.
Ha-Seong Kim added a two-run homer in the eighth, and Drake Baldwin continued the offensive barrage with a two-run homer in the ninth.
The Tigers extended their losing streak to four games and have now dropped seven of their last eight, allowing the Cleveland Guardians to close the gap in the American League Central. Detroit has been outscored 17-2 over its last three contests and struggled to generate offense again, with Spencer Torkelson's solo homer in the fourth providing their only run.
One of Detroit's best chances came in the third inning when Parker Meadows tripled with two outs, but Elder induced a groundout from Gleyber Torres to end the threat and preserve Atlanta's early lead.
Charlie Morton became the first pitcher born after 1900 to hit 200 batters in his career, a milestone not reached since Walter Johnson did it in 1927.
The series continues Saturday as Tigers right-hander Keider Montero (5-3, 4.32 ERA) takes the mound against Braves left-hander Joey Wentz (5-6, 5.56 ERA).
The Atlanta Braves overwhelmed the Detroit Tigers with a 10-1 win, led by Ronald Acuña Jr.'s homer and Bryce Elder's seven strong innings. The Tigers’ struggles persisted both on the mound and at the plate, while the Braves’ balanced offense secured a decisive victory. With the Guardians gaining ground in the AL Central, the Tigers must regroup for the rest of the series. This matchup highlighted key milestones and impressive performances, making it a notable contest in the late-season MLB schedule.
