Salvador Perez hit a pivotal two-run double in the fifth inning, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. The win snapped a cold streak for the Royals, marking just their second victory in their last 10 games.
Perez delivered the key hit in the fifth inning against Mariners starter Emerson Hancock. He lofted a fly ball to center field that Julio Rodríguez lost in the twilight sky and ultimately dropped. What was initially a potentially routine fly ball turned into a two-run double when the misjudged hit bounced to the wall, giving the Royals a commanding 5-1 lead.
Kansas City had established an early lead, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Maikel Garcia provided a run-scoring single in the first. In the second inning, Nick Loftin hit an RBI double and came around to score on a Kyle Isbel forceout, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Randy Arozarena hit a solo home run for the Mariners, his 11th of the season and third in his last four at-bats, cutting into the lead.
The Mariners attempted to rally in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Williamson hit an RBI double and later scored on a single by J.P. Crawford off Royals pitcher Michael Lorenzen, narrowing the deficit.
The Royals bullpen was strong, with five relievers combining for 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Lucas Erceg earned the win (3-2), entering a jam in the seventh with two runners on but escaping the threat with a double-play grounder and a groundout. Carlos Estévez closed the game with a perfect ninth inning to record his 23rd save in 26 opportunities.
Royals reliever Lucas Erceg entered in the seventh inning with runners on first and second and nobody out after a walk. Erceg induced a critical double-play grounder from Cole Young, followed by a groundout from J.P. Crawford, escaping the threat and preserving the Royals' lead.
With his performance, Salvador Perez surpassed Alex Gordon to move into sixth place on the Kansas City Royals' all-time hits list. He now has 1,646 career hits.
The four-game series between the Royals and Mariners continues on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Seattle is scheduled to start right-hander Logan Gilbert (2-2, 3.55 ERA) against Kansas City left-hander Noah Cameron (2-4, 2.79 ERA) in the third game of the set.

The Royals also got early offense from Maikel Garcia, Nick Loftin, and Kyle Isbel. Seattle's scoring included a solo home run from Randy Arozarena and an RBI double by Ben Williamson followed by a J.P. Crawford RBI single. The Kansas City bullpen was stellar, pitching over four scoreless innings, with Lucas Erceg earning the win and Carlos Estévez securing the save.
