The Kansas City Royals clinched a 7-4 victory over the Washington Nationals with a pair of pivotal two-run home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel both connected for crucial blasts as the Royals surged past the Nationals and secured the opener of their 10-game homestand.
In the sixth, after Maikel Garcia drew a leadoff walk, Salvadore Perez delivered his 21st home run of the season off rookie Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli, tying the score at four. Adam Frazier followed with a single to chase Cavalli from the game. Jackson Rutledge entered in relief and induced a double-play grounder from Randal Grichuk, but Nick Loftin extended the inning with a two-out single. Kyle Isbel then cracked his fourth home run of the year, giving Kansas City a decisive two-run advantage.
James Wood walked to lead off the first and came around to score when Josh Bell launched his 15th home run of the season—a deep 422-foot shot to left-center—putting Washington up 2-0. The Royals didn’t wait long to respond, stringing together singles by Garcia, Perez, and Frazier to begin the second inning. Nick Loftin's sacrifice fly plated a run and knotted the score at two apiece.
Kansas City starter Bailey Falter lasted four innings and exited with the score tied after 76 pitches in his home debut since being acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline. In the top of the fifth, Wood singled off Daniel Lynch IV, setting the stage for Paul DeJong, who blasted a one-out, two-run homer—his fourth of the season—pushing the Nationals ahead 4-2.
Mike Yastrzemski provided a late insurance run for the Royals in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly. Adam Frazier finished an impressive 3-for-4 at the dish, while closer Carlos Estévez logged his 30th save of the year, slamming the door in the ninth.
Bobby Witt Jr. rejoined the Royals lineup after a brief absence due to back tightness, tallying a 2-for-5 performance. His presence strengthened the Kansas City offense as they improved to 59-60 on the season.
Kyle Isbel's go-ahead home run capped a dramatic sixth inning for Kansas City. Earlier in the contest, Isbel had popped out with runners in scoring position, but his timely power swing proved crucial in the Royals' comeback win.
Despite their explosive performance, the Royals have scored 441 runs this season—the lowest total in the American League.
The series continues as Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker (7-12, 5.43 ERA) faces off against Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (6-9, 3.36 ERA) on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The Kansas City Royals rallied with back-to-back two-run home runs in the sixth inning to capture a 7-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel led the offensive charge, while Adam Frazier’s three hits powered the Royals to the win.
