The Kansas City Royals powered past the Minnesota Twins 11-2 on Saturday night, thanks to a high-octane five-run first inning sparked by Salvador Perez’s three-run home run.
Vinnie Pasquantino ignited the scoring with a sharp double off the right-field fence, driving in the game’s first run. Shortly after, Salvador Perez crushed his 25th home run of the season, plating three more runs. The inning concluded with Nick Loftin smashing a double to left-center to bring the score to 5-0, as the Royals sent all nine batters to the plate in the opening frame.
Twin's pitcher Joe Ryan struggled, surrendering five runs on four hits and four walks during just two innings of work. With only 62 pitches, this marked his shortest outing since August 7, 2024, and a rare poor performance against Kansas City—he had previously posted an 8-0 record with a 1.34 ERA in 10 starts versus the Royals.
The defeat continued a rough patch for the Minnesota Twins, extending their losing streak to six games.
James Outman broke out of an 0-for-14 slump with a double in the third inning, followed by Byron Buxton’s RBI triple. Buxton came in to score on Luke Keaschall’s grounder, marking Buxton’s eighth straight extra-base hit. However, the Royals quickly answered with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kyle Isbel, Maikel Garcia, and Pasquantino each delivered RBI hits, expanding the Royals' comfortable lead.
Stephen Kolek earned the win for Kansas City, allowing just two runs on six hits over seven innings and recording four strikeouts.
Kansas City native Carter Jensen scored his first major league hit with an RBI double, adding to the Royals’ commanding performance.
Pasquantino, Loftin, and Jensen each registered two RBIs, with Loftin tallying three of the Royals’ 13 hits during the night. The victory came despite the absence of star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who was sidelined with low back spasms. The Royals’ record stands at 3-5 in games without Witt since 2023.
Joe Ryan struggled with his command early, missing the strike zone with eight of his first 13 pitches—setting the tone for the Royals’ explosive start.
Vinnie Pasquantino now leads the majors with 28 go-ahead RBIs this season.
The series continues Sunday with Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (4-7, 5.23 ERA) set to face Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Lorenzen (5-9, 4.54 ERA).
