SAN FRANCISCO — Jose Iglesias hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to break a scoreless tie, scoring automatic runner Jake Cronenworth as the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Monday night.
Tyler Wade's sacrifice bunt started the inning, moving Cronenworth to third base against Giants reliever Ryan Walker.
Giants starter Logan Webb delivered an outstanding performance, striking out seven batters and issuing no walks over eight scoreless innings. He largely outdueled Padres starter Stephen Kolek, who pitched into the sixth in his sixth major league start. Despite his strong outing, Webb did not factor into the decision as the Giants failed to score.
Robert Suarez earned the win for the Padres, escaping a leadoff single in the ninth inning to keep the game tied and finishing the extra frame. Ryan Walker took the loss for the Giants, allowing the winning run in the 10th.
The San Francisco Giants struggled to capitalize on potential scoring chances throughout the game. In the seventh inning, Padres reliever Jeremiah Estrada walked Tyler Fitzgerald and Heliot Ramos with two outs to load the bases, but Jung Hoo Lee struck out on three pitches to end the threat.
The Giants also grounded into inning-ending double plays in both the second and third innings.
In the second inning, Logan Webb and catcher Patrick Bailey combined for an inning-ending double play when Tyler Wade struck out swinging and Bailey threw to second to catch Jake Cronenworth trying to steal.
Both starting pitchers hit batters early in the game, including Giants designated hitter Wilmer Flores, who took a hard inside pitch off his left elbow in the third inning.
Jerar Encarnacion returned from the injured list for the Giants, grounding out as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning.
Manny Machado went hitless for the Padres, only the seventh time in his last 28 games.
The second game of the series will feature Padres right-hander Ryan Bergert (1-0, 0.00 ERA) taking the mound opposite Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.54 ERA).
