Robbie Ray delivered his first complete game since 2017, and Rafael Devers drove in three runs as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on July 3, 2025.
The victory allowed the Giants to split the four-game series in Phoenix, taking the final two contests.
Ray (9-3) was dominant from the start, retiring the first 12 batters he faced before Eugenio Suarez led off the fifth inning with his 27th home run of the season, cutting San Francisco's lead to 4-1. The veteran left-hander was efficient, needing only 102 pitches through nine innings. He allowed just three hits, including two solo homers, walked one, and struck out seven.
Ray previously pitched for the Diamondbacks from 2015 to 2020 before a trade to Toronto, where he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2021.
The Giants established an early lead, going up 2-0 in the first inning thanks to Heliot Ramos's run-scoring double and Jung Hoo Lee's sacrifice fly. San Francisco's offense was productive throughout the game, with Mike Yastrzemski and Willy Adames each collecting three hits. Ramos and Andrew Knizner contributed two hits apiece.
Arizona's starting pitcher, Brandon Pfaadt (8-6), surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out eight.
Ketel Marte added a solo homer in the ninth inning, his 19th of the season, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome.
Third baseman Brett Wisely made a spectacular defensive play to begin the seventh inning. He dove near the line to snag a ground ball hit by the speedy Blaze Alexander, quickly jumped to his feet, and threw accurately to first base for the out, preserving Ray's strong outing.
Robbie Ray's complete game against the Diamondbacks was the second of his career. It marked the 19th complete game in Major League Baseball during the 2025 season and the first thrown by a San Francisco Giants pitcher.
Following the series split, the Giants head to Sacramento for a three-game series starting Friday. San Francisco is scheduled to send RHP Justin Verlander (0-5, 4.26 ERA) to the mound to face Athletics LHP JP Sears (6-7, 5.09 ERA).
The Diamondbacks remain at home for a three-game series beginning Friday. They are slated to start LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-4, 5.13 ERA) against the Kansas City Royals, who will counter with LHP Kris Bubic (6-6, 2.25 ERA).
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on July 3, 2025, to split the four-game series. The game's highlight was a complete game pitched by Giants lefty Robbie Ray, his first since 2017. Rafael Devers was a key offensive contributor for San Francisco with three RBI. The Giants took an early lead and held on for the win, overcoming solo home runs by Arizona's Eugenio Suarez and Ketel Marte. Brandon Pfaadt took the loss for the Diamondbacks. Both teams will continue their seasons with new series starting Friday, the Giants in Sacramento and the Diamondbacks hosting the Royals.
