The San Francisco Giants rallied for a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in an 11-inning thriller at Chase Field, ending a four-game skid and tightening the National League wild card race.
The Giants (76-76) capitalized on a productive 11th inning, scoring five runs to overcome a masterful performance by Arizona’s Brandon Pfaadt. Christian Koss delivered the game’s decisive blow with a two-run double, sparking the extra-inning rally that spoiled Pfaadt's dominant nine-inning, one-hit start.
With the win, San Francisco pulled within 2.5 games of the New York Mets for the final NL wild card spot, while the Diamondbacks (77-76) fell two games behind New York in the race.
Brandon Pfaadt carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with seven strikeouts and only one walk across 97 pitches. The Giants’ Justin Verlander countered with seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out nine, maintaining a stellar 0.87 ERA over his last five starts.
Giants rookie Joel Peguero worked a scoreless 10th inning to keep the game locked at 0-0. In the top of the 11th, Bryce Elkridge drew a walk, and Jerar Encarnacion singled to bring in the first run. After a Patrick Bailey single loaded the bases, Christian Koss doubled to right-center to make it 3-0. Juan Morillo relieved for Arizona, but Grant McCray added a sacrifice fly and Rafael Devers drove in another run with a single, extending the lead to 5-0.
Peguero allowed the automatic runner to score for Arizona on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th but closed out the win for San Francisco.
In the bottom of the ninth, Arizona’s Corbin Carroll hit his 17th triple of the year, extending his major league lead. Giants reliever Ryan Walker loaded the bases but responded by striking out pinch-hitter Adrian Del Castillo and retiring Alek Thomas to escape the jam.
Corbin Carroll now has 30 home runs this season and is one stolen base away from becoming the first Diamondback to join the 30-30 club.
The Giants will begin a pivotal series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, with Logan Webb (14-10, 3.34 ERA) set to start. The Diamondbacks are set to host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series beginning Friday.
The San Francisco Giants overcame a brilliant one-hit start by Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt, breaking through with a five-run 11th inning to secure a key 5-1 win. This victory boosted the Giants’ wild card hopes and tightened the NL playoff race, while the Diamondbacks fell further behind. Key performances from Christian Koss and Justin Verlander guided the Giants, and all eyes now turn to their next match-up against the Dodgers as the postseason approaches.
