Boston Red Sox News & Updates

SAN FRANCISCO -- Heliot Ramos delivered a key two-run double in the decisive seventh inning, adding to an earlier two-run single, as the San Francisco Giants rallied to defeat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Sunday.

Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski contributed with solo home runs in the fifth inning against Red Sox starter Luis Giolito. Willy Adames also homered in the eighth.

In the seventh inning, after hits by Adames and Schmitt put runners aboard, Tyler Fitzgerald laid down a bunt that scored the tying run, chasing reliever Greg Weissert. San Francisco then took the lead when a liner hit by Yastrzemski off Justin Wilson resulted in a missed catch by Red Sox second baseman Romy González.

Boston initially took the lead in the fifth with a two-run homer by Rob Refsnyder, followed one out later by a solo shot from Romy González. The Giants responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back homers from Schmitt and Yastrzemski to tie the game at 4.

Ceddanne Rafaela homered for Boston in the sixth inning.

The Red Sox scored first in the initial inning due to a fielding error by Ramos in left field, but Ramos later atoned with his two-run single in the third.

A sellout crowd of 40,350 attended the game, with thousands lining up early for a Jung Hoo Lee giveaway jersey.

Giants left-hander Robbie Ray pitched five innings, striking out seven and walking one while allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Erik Miller earned the win, pitching the seventh inning.

Key moment

Boston's Jarren Duran and manager Alex Cora were ejected in the eighth inning. The ejections followed Duran's argument with second base umpire Doug Eddings after a tag call at second base was upheld upon replay review. Duran singled to right field but was thrown out at second by Yastrzemski's throw to Adames.

Duran was ejected after visibly reacting to the call while walking towards the dugout. He then attempted to approach Eddings but was held back. Cora subsequently came out to argue and was also ejected.

Key stat

The Giants boast a major league-best 15-2 record in home day games this season. They have hit 44 home runs in afternoon contests.
