The Miami Marlins secured an impressive 8-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers at home, highlighted by a dominant pitching performance from Sandy Alcantara and explosive home runs from Miami’s young lineup.
Sandy Alcantara delivered seven innings of two-run baseball, scattering four hits and striking out eight Tigers. The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner matched his season-long best with seven complete innings for the sixth time this year.
On the Tigers’ side, Tarik Skubal—reigning American League Cy Young Award recipient—struggled after a string of strong appearances. Skubal allowed four runs and four hits before exiting in the fourth inning due to left side tightness. Previously, Skubal had allowed just one earned run over his last 27 1/3 innings.
Shortstop Javier Báez left the game in the second inning after fouling a pitch off his helmet and near his left eye. The incident occurred during an at-bat, and the Tigers were forced to make adjustments in their lineup following his exit.
Rookie Agustín Ramírez put the Marlins on the board early with a solo home run in the first inning, marking his 20th homer of the season. Heriberto Hernández followed up with another homer leading off the second inning to increase the Marlins' lead to 2-0.
Javier Sanoja contributed an RBI fielder’s choice in the second and later hit a two-run double in response to the Tigers narrowing the gap. Joey Wiemer also went deep, blasting a two-run home run against Detroit reliever Chris Paddack in the sixth inning to expand Miami’s advantage.
Joey Wiemer’s two-run homer in the sixth inning proved pivotal, as it gave the Marlins a comfortable cushion and dashed any hopes of a Tigers comeback.
This win marked the Marlins’ first three-game winning streak since a home sweep of the New York Yankees in early August, which brought Miami’s record to .500 at 55-55.
The series continues with Tigers right-hander Charlie Morton (7-13, 4.85 ERA) set to take the mound on Saturday. The Marlins will counter with Jansen Junk (6-3, 4.48 ERA).
The Miami Marlins defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-2, riding strong pitching from Sandy Alcantara and offensive firepower from young sluggers like Agustín Ramírez, Heriberto Hernández, and Joey Wiemer. Injuries to key Tigers players, including Tarik Skubal and Javier Báez, hampered Detroit’s efforts as the Marlins captured their third straight win and look to build on this momentum in the ongoing series.
