The Oakland Athletics pulled out a late victory against the Seattle Mariners with a 2-1 win in 10 innings. In a tightly contested matchup at T-Mobile Park, Shea Langeliers delivered the decisive hit, driving in the game-winning run with a two-out double in the top of the 10th.
The Athletics managed only five hits on the night but made them count. Oakland scored their first run in the fourth inning when Darell Hernaiz singled in Jacob Wilson, breaking the initial deadlock.
The Mariners responded in the sixth, courtesy of Randy Arozarenaâs career-high 24th home run, tying the game at 1-1. Despite Seattleâs efforts, their offense was kept quiet, managing just three hits against a combination of five Athletics pitchers.
In the 10th inning, Colby Thomas began as the automatic runner at second base. A sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Brett Harris moved Thomas to third, but a groundout by Nick Kurtz kept him there. With two outs, Langeliers looped a double to right field, scoring Thomas for the go-ahead run.
Tyler Ferguson earned the win for Oakland, pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings. Hogan Harris came on in a tense 10th inning, inheriting two runners. He secured the final two outs, picking up his second save of the season. The Athleticsâ pitching staff as a whole was outstanding, combining to hold the Mariners to just three hits.
Jacob Wilson paced the Athleticsâ offense with two hits, continuing a strong return from a recent injury. The rookie leads all major league rookies with 118 hits this season. For the Mariners, recently-activated Victor Robles went 1 for 4 after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Robles is currently appealing a 10-game suspension stemming from an incident in the minor leagues.
With the loss, Seattle dropped three games behind the division-leading Houston Astros but still holds a three-game advantage over Kansas City for the final AL wild card spot.
The game was played in unseasonably warm conditions, with a first-pitch temperature of 84 degreesâthe hottest at T-Mobile Park since July 15, 2023.
Oakland will send left-hander Jacob Lopez (7-6, 3.28 ERA) to the mound for the finale as they wrap up the season series against Seattle. The Mariners counter with right-hander Logan Gilbert (3-5, 3.83 ERA).
The Oakland Athletics outlasted the Seattle Mariners in an extra-inning pitching duel, prevailing 2-1 thanks to Shea Langeliersâ clutch double. Excellent work from the Aâs bullpen and timely hitting, combined with standout efforts from rookies and returning veterans, shaped a dramatic contest that has implications for both teams in the AL playoff race.
