Alec Burleson led the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-3 win over the Miami Marlins with a standout performance, going 3 for 4 at the plate, including a crucial go-ahead single in the seventh inning. This result broke a five-game losing streak for the Cardinals and handed the Marlins another loss in their recent slide.
In the seventh inning, Miami right fielder Dane Myers missed a routine catch at the warning track, allowing the Cardinals to put a runner in scoring position. Burleson capitalized with an RBI single, bringing Iván Herrera home for a 4-3 lead. Pedro Pagés followed up with another RBI single to extend the lead.
The Marlins struggled defensively, committing two errors, allowing three unearned runs, throwing four wild pitches, and issuing five walks. Catcher Agustín Ramírez allowed a pitch to get past him, letting Garrett Hampson score. Ramírez now leads the league with 11 passed balls this season.
Nolan Gorman added to the Cardinals’ advantage by launching a two-run homer in the seventh, capping off a five-run rally that put the game out of reach for Miami.
Reliever Matt Svanson (2-0) picked up the win for St. Louis after pitching two solid innings, conceding just one hit and recording one strikeout.
The Marlins tallied their first run in the opening inning via a sacrifice fly from Jakob Marslee. Marslee later tied the game with an RBI double in the sixth. Eric Wagaman contributed a solo home run in the fourth. However, these efforts were not enough to keep pace with St. Louis.
Lake Bachar (5-1) took the loss for the Marlins, giving up four hits over two innings of relief.
The Marlins have now lost four of their last five games and eight of their last ten, extending a difficult stretch for the team.
A potential Marlins rally was halted in the sixth inning when Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras caught a line drive and quickly turned a double play by tagging out the runner diving back to first base, preserving a 3-3 tie at the time.
Eury Pérez became the first pitcher in Miami Marlins history to throw four wild pitches in a single game.
The Cardinals and Marlins continue their series on Tuesday night. Edward Cabrera (6-6, 3.34 ERA) is scheduled to start for Miami, facing off against Michael McGreevy (4-2, 4.41 ERA) for St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals halted their five-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over the Miami Marlins, highlighted by Alec Burleson's clutch hitting and Nolan Gorman's two-run homer. Defensive miscues and pitching struggles plagued the Marlins, who continue their difficult run. Both teams meet again for another matchup as the Marlins look to rebound and the Cardinals aim to build momentum. Stay tuned for more MLB action and key moments as the regular season continues.
