Bryson Stott hit a three-run homer and Ranger Suárez pitched seven effective innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Wednesday night.
Suárez (6-1) delivered another solid performance, allowing just one run on four hits since returning from an early season back injury. The veteran left-hander struck out eight and walked two.
Suárez has been impressive, yielding only eight runs since giving up seven in his initial start of the season on May 4.
Philadelphia's offense erupted for four runs in the fourth inning against Adam Mazur (0-1), highlighted by Stott's fifth homer of the season. J.T. Realmuto contributed an RBI single before Stott sent a first-pitch fastball deep to center field.
Mazur made his Marlins debut after being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville. He struck out five and allowed five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Marlins narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the ninth on Dane Myers’ one-out RBI single. However, Matt Strahm closed the door, striking out Connor Norby and getting Nick Fortes to fly out to secure his fourth save and end Miami's rally.
For the Phillies, Alec Bohm continued his strong hitting, singling twice and doubling. This marked his second multihit outing in the series and sixth in his last nine games overall.
Nick Castellanos also had a multi-hit game with a double and a single in his return to the lineup. He had been benched the day prior for making "an inappropriate comment" after being removed for a defensive replacement on Monday.
Norby provided the Marlins' first run with a solo shot off Suárez in the fifth inning, a blast that traveled 415 feet to center field to make the score 4-1.
Jack Winkler recorded his first major league hit in the ninth inning against Matt Strahm.
Ranger Suárez has now pitched six or more innings in each of his eight starts since his challenging season debut where he gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The series concludes on Thursday. Philadelphia's LHP Christopher Sánchez (5-2, 3.05 ERA) is scheduled to start against Marlins RHP Edward Cabrera (2-2, 4.10 ERA).
