Yandy Díaz and Brandon Lowe delivered clutch two-out RBI singles in the eighth inning, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 2-1 comeback victory over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. This marked the second consecutive day the Rays rallied late to top the Giants, who have now lost seven straight games.
The Giants appeared in control for much of the game, with veteran right-hander Justin Verlander dominating through seven scoreless innings. Verlander surrendered only two hits and struck out eight, coming within four strikeouts of tying Walter Johnson for ninth place on the all-time list.
After Verlander exited, the Rays offense came alive. With two outs in the eighth, Nick Fortes was hit by a pitch, and Chandler Simpson followed with a single. Yandy Díaz then singled to tie the game, and Brandon Lowe added his second hit of the night to give Tampa Bay a one-run lead.
Tampa Bay starter Adrian Houser delivered five scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing only four hits. Reliever Edwin Uceta picked up his ninth win of the season by retiring four batters. Closer Pete Fairbanks recorded his 22nd save by closing out the ninth inning.
For San Francisco, José Buttó took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead runs in the eighth. Verlander’s performance was a bright spot despite the defeat, maintaining his impressive strikeout pace late in his career.
The Giants opened the scoring in the sixth inning when Willy Adames singled, stole second base, and crossed home on a Christian Koss single past diving third baseman Junior Caminero. Tampa Bay’s Jake Mangum made a crucial sliding catch in right field to keep the Giants from adding more runs in that inning, chasing down a deep drive by Jung Hoo Lee with two on and two out.
Rays manager Kevin Cash was ejected in the eighth inning for arguing a strike call, adding intensity to a tightly contested matchup.
The series finale will feature Giants ace Logan Webb (10-9, 3.34 ERA) facing Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot (8-9, 3.86 ERA) in what promises to be another competitive contest on Sunday.
The Tampa Bay Rays secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants with a late rally in the eighth inning, overcoming a stellar start by Justin Verlander. Strong pitching performances highlighted the game, with Houston’s Adrian Houser matching his season-high in strikeouts and San Francisco’s bullpen faltering late. As the Rays look to sweep the series in San Francisco, all eyes will be on the pitching duel in the upcoming finale.
