The Detroit Tigers emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series, thanks to a historic performance by Tarik Skubal and tenacious playmaking late in the game.
Tigers ace Tarik Skubal delivered a dominant performance, tying Detroit's postseason record with 14 strikeouts. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, throwing 107 pitches (73 for strikes), and allowed just one run on three hits, with three walks. Skubal’s fastball averaged an impressive 99.1 mph, significantly above his season average, and he set a new career high for strikeouts in a single game.
Will Vest was called upon for the final four outs and faced high pressure in the ninth inning. After Cleveland star Jose Ramírez reached third base due to a wide throw from Detroit’s shortstop, Vest struck out pinch-hitter George Valera. He then fielded a grounder from Kyle Manzardo and tagged out Ramírez, who attempted to score, before securing the final out on a fly ball. Vest’s poise preserved the Tigers’ narrow lead and secured the Game 1 win.
Detroit opened the scoring in the first inning when Kerry Carpenter reached base and advanced to second courtesy of a Cleveland fielding error. He scored on Spencer Torkelson’s two-out bloop single to left field, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Guardians responded in the fourth inning. Angel Martínez reached on an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Ramírez, and after another infield hit by Gabriel Arias, Martínez dove home head-first. Originally ruled out, instant replay overturned the call, tying the game at 1-1.
Detroit regained the lead in the seventh inning. Riley Greene reached third base, and Zach McKinstry executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt, allowing Greene to score. The Tigers held onto this slim advantage for the remainder of the game.
While Skubal starred for Detroit, Cleveland’s Gavin Williams also impressed. Williams allowed only two unearned runs over six-plus innings, giving up five hits, striking out eight, and walking one. However, the Guardians’ defensive miscues proved costly in this tightly contested matchup.
With this Game 1 victory, Detroit is now just one win away from advancing to the AL Division Series for the second consecutive year. The Tigers will have their opportunity to clinch the series in Game 2.
