Rookie pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano was a standout for the Baltimore Orioles, claiming his 10th victory of the season with 5 1/3 strong innings against the Seattle Mariners. Despite a lengthy rain delay, the Orioles emerged with a 5-3 win, handing Seattle their second consecutive loss after an impressive eight-game winning streak.
Julio Rodríguez delivered a two-run home run for the Mariners, narrowing the deficit after the rain delay. The blast came off reliever Rico Garcia, energizing Seattle, but ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome Baltimore’s lead.
Cal Raleigh, the major league’s home run leader with 45, was absent from Seattle’s starting lineup for only the fifth time all season. Raleigh later appeared as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and drew a walk, looking to ignite a late rally.
Sugano, the 35-year-old rookie from Japan, threw 81 pitches before being pulled due to a 2-hour, 18-minute rain delay. He secured back-to-back victories for the first time this year and improved his record to 10-5, continuing a hot stretch where he is 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA over his past four starts.
The Orioles took command in the fourth inning against Seattle starter Logan Evans. Jordan Westburg scored on a two-out wild pitch, and Ryan Mountcastle took advantage of an error to move from first to third. Following a walk to Daniel Johnson, Mountcastle and Johnson completed a double steal, extending Baltimore’s lead. Jeremiah Jackson’s RBI single capped the frame.
Baltimore padded their lead in the fifth inning with Gunnar Henderson’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly from Mountcastle, providing valuable insurance for the bullpen.
In the ninth, Dietrich Enns allowed a run on an RBI grounder but quickly retired Josh Naylor to secure his first save since 2021. Keegan Akin also played a pivotal role in the seventh, inducing a key groundout with two runners on to escape trouble and preserve the Orioles’ advantage.
Logan Evans matched his shortest start of the season, yielding three runs—two earned—over four innings for the Mariners. The loss drops Seattle to 67-55, now 1 1/2 games behind AL West-leading Houston.
The Mariners open a three-game set against the New York Mets, with Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.19 ERA) taking the mound. Baltimore, meanwhile, heads to Houston but has yet to announce their starting pitcher for Friday’s matchup.
The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-3, led by rookie Tomoyuki Sugano’s effective start before a rain delay. Julio Rodríguez homered for Seattle, but a combination of Orioles’ opportunistic baserunning, timely hitting, and clutch bullpen performances made the difference. Seattle will look to rebound in a series against the Mets, while Baltimore carries momentum into their next matchup versus Houston.
