TORONTO — Bo Bichette delivered a crucial go-ahead, two-run double in a decisive four-run fifth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Monday night. Kevin Gausman anchored the win with seven strong innings, helping the Blue Jays extend their home winning streak to a franchise-record 11 games.
Toronto’s current home winning streak surpasses their previous record of 10 consecutive wins at Exhibition Stadium, achieved from July 21 to August 3, 1985.
The AL East-leading Blue Jays continue their impressive run, securing their 17th victory in 21 games. Since sweeping San Diego in late May, Toronto has been dominant at home, winning 23 of their last 27 contests.
The Yankees struggled defensively, with third baseman Oswald Peraza and shortstop Anthony Volpe both committing throwing errors in the fifth inning that directly led to Blue Jays runs. Volpe now has 12 errors this season, close to Willy Adames, who entered Monday with a major league-leading 13.
Giancarlo Stanton provided the Yankees’ lone run, leading off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. However, that was all New York could muster against Kevin Gausman (7-7). The right-hander was effective, allowing only four hits, striking out eight, and walking two. This victory marked Gausman’s first win since June 26 against Cleveland.
For the Yankees, Carlos Rodon (10-7) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits through five innings.
The Blue Jays bullpen held strong after Gausman’s departure. Brendon Little secured one out in the eighth inning before Yariel Rodríguez entered to retire Giancarlo Stanton and Jasson Dominguez, stranding two runners. Jeff Hoffman closed out the game in the ninth, striking out the side to earn his 24th save in 28 opportunities.
In a strategic move in the third inning, the Blue Jays intentionally walked Aaron Judge after Trent Grisham hit a two-out double. Kevin Gausman then successfully struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. to end the threat.
The decisive fifth inning began with George Springer drawing a walk, followed by a single from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Both runners then scored on Bo Bichette’s double into the left-field corner, giving Toronto the lead.
Blue Jays infielder Davis Schneider engaged in a remarkable 14-pitch at-bat against Carlos Rodon in the fifth inning, fouling off nine pitches before eventually popping out to Anthony Volpe.
The series continues with Toronto Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (1-0, 4.70 ERA) scheduled to start Tuesday’s game against New York Yankees RHP Cam Schlittler (1-0, 5.06 ERA).
