Rookie Troy Johnston powered the Miami Marlins to a dramatic 6-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers with two home runs, including a walk-off two-run shot in the 11th inning. This marked Johnston’s first career multi-homer game and delivered the Marlins their fourth straight win.
Agustín Ramírez contributed a double and a single, while Otto López tallied two hits and drove in a run. The Tigers grabbed a lead in the top of the 11th inning with an RBI double from Wenceel Pérez. However, in the bottom half, López started the rally with an infield single that advanced automatic runner Joey Wiemer. Heriberto Hernández then tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice before Johnston's game-winning homer off Rafael Montero.
Josh Simpson earned the win for Miami, recording the final two outs in the top of the 11th. The Tigers saw Gleyber Torres put them ahead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, but Johnston evened the score with a solo homer in the sixth. Janson Junk pitched six innings for Detroit, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking one. Charlie Morton, Detroit’s starter, allowed two runs on three hits in four innings, with four strikeouts and four walks.
Miami opened the scoring early as López drove in a run in the first, and Javier Sanoja followed with an RBI double in the second for a 2-0 advantage. Kerry Carpenter responded for Detroit with a two-run homer in the third, his 25th of the season, tying the game at 2-2.
With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 11th, Josh Simpson managed high-pressure outs. A wild pitch ricocheted behind the plate, but catcher Liam Hicks tagged Spencer Torkelson at home, preventing another Tigers run. Simpson then struck out Parker Meadows to end the inning, limiting Detroit to just one run in the frame.
Marlins relievers combined for 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings before surrendering a run on Pérez’s double in the 11th inning.
The Tigers have not yet announced a starting pitcher for the series finale. The Marlins will send right-hander Adam Mazur (0-3, 6.30 ERA) to the mound.
