DETROIT -- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled twice and scored a pair of runs as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the slumping Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Friday night, July 25, 2025, at Comerica Park.
The American League-leading Blue Jays are now 7-1 since the All-Star break, while the Tigers have lost five straight and 11 of their last 12 games.
José Berríos (7-4) picked up the win for Toronto, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks through six innings. Keider Montero (4-3) took the loss for Detroit, allowing six runs on nine hits in four-plus innings.
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Wenceel Pérez singled, stole second, and scored on Dillon Dingler's double.
Toronto responded in the fourth, with Addison Barger's RBI double tying the game at 1-1. Barger then scored with two outs on a throwing error by Javier Báez, giving the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Jays then took control with a four-run fifth inning. Nathan Lukes and George Springer started the inning with singles, followed by Guerrero's RBI double. Bo Bichette's two-run double extended Toronto's lead to 5-1, and Alejandro Kirk's single off reliever Tyler Holton gave the Blue Jays a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Spencer Torkelson's 23rd home run of the season pulled the Tigers within 6-2 in the sixth inning.
The Tigers did not get another baserunner after Spencer Torkelson's sixth-inning home run, as the Blue Jays bullpen effectively shut down Detroit's offense for the remainder of the game.
The Tigers have been outscored 83-32 during their 12-game skid, averaging just 2.67 runs scored per game while giving up 6.92. This extended slump has seen them surrender nearly half of their season's plus-112 run differential, which stood after 93 games.
The teams will play the third game of their four-game series on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 6:10 PM ET. Tigers ace left-hander Tarik Skubal (10-3, 2.19 ERA) is scheduled to face Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman (7-7, 4.01).
