The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Friday night at Rogers Centre, riding a standout performance from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and key relief pitching to maintain their lead in the American League standings.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was the offensive star for Toronto, reaching base five times and raising his average to .305. Guerrero went 3-for-3 with three singles and drew two walks, one of them intentional, putting constant pressure on the Orioles’ pitching staff.
After the game was tied into the sixth inning, Myles Straw delivered a clutch double to drive in the tiebreaking run and shift momentum in the Blue Jays’ favor. With Isiah Kiner-Falefa reaching on an infield single and advancing on an error, Straw’s extra-base hit gave Toronto a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Daulton Varsho came through in the eighth inning, launching a two-run, pinch-hit double off Shawn Dubin during a three-run rally, providing Toronto with crucial insurance runs and helping seal the victory.
Chris Bassitt started for the Blue Jays, allowing just one run and two hits over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Braydon Fisher picked up the win (5-0) after navigating the pivotal sixth inning as the Blue Jays improved their record to 64-4 when scoring five or more runs.
Orioles starter Trevor Rogers exited after five innings due to a sore toe on his left foot. Despite allowing only one unearned run on three hits and lowering his ERA to 1.43 in 16 starts, his early departure proved costly for Baltimore. Dietrich Enns took over in relief and allowed the go-ahead run in the sixth frame. Baltimore’s Tyler O’Neill returned from injury, starting as designated hitter but went 0-for-3 with a walk.
Samuel Basallo led off the Baltimore third with a double and was driven in by Jackson Holliday, giving the Orioles an early advantage. However, Toronto tied it in the fifth after Davis Schneider walked and scored due to Colton Cowser misplaying Guerrero’s hard-hit single. Defensively, Cowser made a highlight-reel diving catch in the sixth to retire Ty France.
With the loss, Baltimore dropped to 8-2 in September action.
The series continues Saturday, as Toronto sends Max Scherzer (5-3, 4.36 ERA) to the mound against Baltimore’s Tomoyuki Sagano (10-8, 4.51 ERA).
The Toronto Blue Jays leveraged clutch hitting from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Myles Straw along with strong pitching, to secure a 6-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Key defensive plays and pitching changes shaped the game's outcome, as Toronto continued to solidify their playoff ambitions. The pivotal sixth-inning rally and contributions from the bench prove why the Blue Jays remain a dominant force at home.
