The Oakland Athletics secured a dramatic 3-2 win against the Baltimore Orioles, clinching the series with a thrilling ninth-inning comeback. Willie MacIver delivered the decisive blow, smacking a two-run double down the left-field line off Keegan Akin to lift the Athletics ahead.
In the top of the ninth inning, Darell Hernaiz and Lawrence Butler crossed the plate on MacIver’s clutch double. Butler, pinch-running for Gio Urshela, charged home aggressively, braving the relay throw that came in ahead of him but skipped in the dirt and off line. Catcher Alex Jackson couldn't handle the throw in time, sealing the Athletics' comeback.
Elvis Alvarado earned the win for Oakland by recording the final five outs, shutting down Baltimore’s rally attempts. Earlier in the game, Brent Rooker knocked in Oakland’s first run with a single in the sixth inning before exiting in the eighth as a precaution after showing signs of a cramp or injury.
Jordan Westburg put Baltimore on the board with his 14th home run in the fifth inning. Coby Mayo added a go-ahead pinch-hit double in the seventh, briefly restoring the Orioles’ lead before the Athletics rallied in the ninth.
Baltimore missed a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jeremiah Jackson led off with a triple. Greg Allen’s squeeze bunt attempt was thwarted by MacIver, who tagged Jackson lunging toward home on the third-base line, ending the threat.
Athletics rookie Luis Morales battled command issues, throwing just 25 strikes among 57 pitches and issuing five walks. Nonetheless, he held the Orioles hitless over 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut start.
The Athletics return home for a six-game homestand, opening with a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs (10-7, 3.89 ERA) is slated to start the opener and aims to extend his team-leading win total.
Baltimore continues their homestand and faces the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series. Right-hander Dean Kremer (8-8, 4.35 ERA) looks to bounce back after three consecutive outings without a quality start.
The Oakland Athletics mounted a late rally to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2, clinching the series with key contributions from Willie MacIver and pitcher Elvis Alvarado. Rookie Luis Morales impressed in his debut despite control struggles, while the Orioles showed flashes of power but fell short in the end. Both teams now shift focus to new series as August baseball continues.
