PHILADELPHIA – Zack Wheeler delivered a dominant one-hitter, his first complete game since 2021, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Citizens Bank Park in a game scheduled for 12:35 PM ET.
Wheeler (9-2), who was named the National League’s pitcher of the month in June, allowed just one hit: a leadoff home run by Austin Hays in the fifth inning. The right-hander was masterful, striking out 12 batters without issuing a walk across 108 pitches.
Wheeler's recent performance has been outstanding; since returning from paternity leave on June 9, he has surrendered only three earned runs over 40 innings.
Offensively for the Phillies, Kyle Schwarber tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI double. The decisive blow came in the eighth when Bryson Stott launched a two-run home run off Reds reliever Tony Santillan (1-2), giving Philadelphia the lead.
After Wheeler completed the eighth inning by striking out Stephenson on his 100th pitch, the Phillies' offense broke the 1-1 tie. J.T. Realmuto singled with one out, setting the stage for Bryson Stott. Stott connected with a center-cut fastball from Santillan for his sixth homer of the season, securing the win.
According to Baseball-Reference and veteran stat man Bob Vetrone Jr., Zack Wheeler achieved a rare feat in this game. He became only the third Phillies pitcher since 1901 to allow a home run as his only baserunner while pitching eight or more innings. The others were Robin Roberts on May 13, 1954, and Curt Schilling on Sept. 9, 1992.
The Cincinnati Reds return home Monday night, July 7, 2025, to begin a four-game series against the Miami Marlins. Brady Singer (7-6, 4.36 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Reds, facing Miami's Janson Junk (2-1, 3.62 ERA).
The Philadelphia Phillies begin a week-long road trip to California on Monday night, July 7, 2025, starting with a game in San Francisco against the Giants. Cristopher Sanchez (7-2, 2.68 ERA) is slated to be the Phillies' starting pitcher.
